About Cyprus Squash Rackets Association

In 1983, a group of Nicosia-based amateur squash players decided to form an Association to promote their favorite sport throughout Cyprus. Twelve years later, this club had grown to become a fully-fledged National Association, which hosted the Men's World Open in November 1995.

The early years were difficult for the Cyprus Squash Rackets Association.

The sport was virtually unknown in the island and the number of available courts was just eight. Through small tournaments and the organization of a league, the number of players began to steadily grow. Today, the Cyprus Squash Rackets Association has three regional member associations (Nicosia, Limassol and Famagusta) and the number of courts in the island is over 50.

Every year, six regional open tournaments are held, as well as the National Championships and the Cyprus Open, which attracts players from neighboring countries and further a field.

The participation of the Cyprus National team in international events began in 1986 with the European Team Championships in Aix-en-Provence. This exposure to the international scene proved beneficial for the players, who grew more acquainted with the standard of play outside their country, and for CSRA officials, who established useful contacts with foreign Associations. The Cyprus team went on to participant in four subsequent European Team Championships.

In 1989, through the sole initiative of the Cyprus Squash Rackets Association, the first Small European Nation Squash Tournament was held in Nicosia, with six European countries competing. This proved a great success, as countries whose players were of a comparable standard were able to meet and compete in a social and friendly environment. Since then, the tournament has been held annually in a different country and from 1994, under the umbrella of the European Squash Federation.

CSRA has been a member of the European and the World Squash Federations since 1984, and representatives have been present at the AGM’s of both Federations. Through contact with ESF and WSF officials, and the CSRA’s leading role among the Small Nations of Europe, in 1994 a vice-presidency post was secured on the Executive Committee of the ESF for the CSRA’s vice president Mr Demetris Koulountis.

In November 1995, CSRA hosted two very prestigious events - The Men’s World Open and the Annual General Meeting of the World Squash Federation. Through these landmark events, CSRA’s aim of continued active involvement in world squash affairs was further reinforced, whilst local awareness of the sport was raised further.

The aim of CSRA for the foreseeable future is to encourage more and more young people to become involved in the sport. Together with wide publicity, squash clinics are being organized for juniors, providing instruction from the beginner’s level up to national league standards. These are supplemented by summer camps, held either locally or overseas, and the annual junior tournament.
